A Client-Centered Bankruptcy And Business Litigation Practice
At Levitt & Slafkes, P.C., we understand the problems debt can cause individuals, families and small businesses. More importantly, we know how to help.
Our law firm has assisted clients in thousands of personal and small-business bankruptcy cases. In doing so, we have provided effective counsel to clients fighting foreclosure and dealing with other debt issues.
What Does A Bankruptcy Do?
A bankruptcy immediately puts in place a court order called the Automatic Stay. On a temporary basis, the automatic stay prohibits creditors and collectors from communicating with you.
During the course of your bankruptcy, an order called "discharge" is entered. It is the discharge order that permanently prohibits creditors and collectors from pursuing you for the debt you owe.
If you have questions about your eligibility for bankruptcy, we can help you understand all of your legal options. We do so in such a way as to make it possible for you to choose from these options intelligently and confidently, knowing that you have been advised by attorneys who hold decades of experience in these matters.
Large Firm Experience. Small Firm Attention.
We have built our firm in order to maximize our ability to meet our clients' specific needs. We hold experience gained from years of serving clients at a large firm. Now, we can deliver that level of service to our clients by applying lean principles of legal practice management.
Contemporary legal technology in research and communications enables us to deliver the level of service formerly associated with only the large firms of yesterday. Meet Our Firm's Attorneys
During his 30-year legal career, attorney Bruce H. Levitt has concentrated his practice in the areas of bankruptcy, debtor/creditor rights, foreclosure defense, and bankruptcy and commercial litigation. He developed his expertise representing debtors, creditors and bankruptcy trustees while working in several major law firms. In 1995, he decided to pursue his passion of helping individuals and small businesses address their financial problems by opening the law firm of Levitt & Slafkes, P.C., in Maplewood, New Jersey.
Admitted to practice in New Jersey in 1984, attorney Levitt was previously a Bankruptcy Trustee for the Office of the Unites States Trustee in Newark, New Jersey, where he administered Chapter 7 and Chapter 11 cases. He is a former member of the Lawyers' Advisory Committee of the United States Bankruptcy Court for the District of New Jersey as well as the District V-B Fee Arbitration Committee of the Supreme Court of New Jersey. A former Master of the Bankruptcy American Inn of Court, he has had articles published in the New Jersey State Bar Association Bankruptcy Section Newsletter and the New Jersey Law Journal.
As an experienced litigator, among his proudest accomplishments is his successful representation of the prevailing Plaintiff in the recent bankruptcy case of Kemp v. Countrywide Home Loans. This case gained national prominence in the ongoing battle to require mortgage lenders to follow the law before they can foreclose and take away a person's home.
For her part, Attorney Shelley B. Slafkes has been practicing law for over 20 years in both the private and nonprofit sectors. Her practice is concentrated in the areas of consumer rights, bankruptcy and commercial litigation. In 1995, she and her husband, Bruce Levitt, decided to found their own firm, Levitt & Slafkes, P.C. Doing so allows them both to focus their practices on small businesses and on individuals from all walks of life in both bankruptcy-related and litigation matters.
One of Attorney Slafkes' core beliefs is that you succeed by treating others with fairness and respect. When you sit down with her to discuss your difficult financial situation, she will treat you as a real person, with real concerns, and not just another case number. As a former social worker, her training and experience allow her to bring a unique perspective to the practice of bankruptcy and foreclosure law.
