Attorney Shelley Slafkes recently spoke as a panelist in the Financial Reform Summit, hosted by New Jersey Citizen Action Education Fund (NJCAEF). The NJCEF is a non-profit organization dedicated to the financial empowerment of low income and moderate income people in New Jersey. Together with community leaders, the summit brought together advocates, students, elected officials, financial institutions, small business owners and other stakeholders to hear experts and leaders talk about some of the most pressing economic issues facing New Jerseyans.
Attorney Slafkes’ panel, titled “Financial Debt Traps and Other Obstacles to Financial Security,” focused on the burdens of student loans, medical debt, and high interest rate loans. The attorneys of Levitt & Slafkes have spent their careers working on debt and consumer issues, and helping individuals and small businesses address their financial problems. As such, the panel covered illegal payday and other high interest rate loans, credit reporting, abuses and the business of debt collection.
According to Ms. Slafkes, “In trying to save their homes from foreclosure, many of the people we meet with have unknowingly been the victims of costly scams. This has unfortunately resulted in the loss of their homes. My goal, as a participant, was to make people aware of common loan modification and foreclosure scams in the hope that this knowledge will help them to avoid falling into these traps.”
